Frequently Asked Questions

Q> Is Shriek Manor a “haunted house attraction” that we can walk through?

A> No. Shriek Manor is a Haunted “Yard Display” (like a Christmas display) that spans the front, east and west sides of our property. There is no “inside” haunted house portion to walk through (although our basement could also be considered quite scary! <grin>)

Q> When is the best time to see your display?

A> Try to plan on visiting towards the end of the month, as our display gradually builds throughout October.

Please remember that while the lights are officially “on” in the second weekend in October (generally), the fog, animatronics, sounds, etc. only run on October 30th and the 31st. Please refer to our details page for more information.

Q> Why do you do this every year?

A> It’s a lot of fun, it lets us use our technical and artistic abilities in some creative ways, it allows us all to work together on some neat projects, and we really do enjoy watching the expressions and hearing the comments of everyone who comes by to view our efforts.

Q> What do you charge?

A> Nadda, zip, zero, nil, null, nothing.

Q> What is your weather policy?

A> Due to the fragile nature of some of our display elements, we cannot run our yard haunt in heavy snow, rain or winds. Feel free to check out our weather page for the latest information.

Q> How do I get there?

A> The easiest way is to take Speer Blvd. to Clarkson St. Go North on Clarkson to 10th Ave. Turn right and go East on 10th Ave. for one block. We’re on the left hand side (you can’t miss us!). Need more assistance? Try our handy map.

Q> What’s the parking situation?

A> There is usually street parking available in the early evening hours. It does fill up, however, as the night goes on.

Q> Will your display frighten young children?

A> Typically our display is for all ages. However we have seen that some children around the age of 4-5 seem to frighten a little easier than others. If you want to avoid any “surprises” on Halloween night, bring your child to the front door first so they can get their candy and we’ll be happy to steer you clear of the spookier effects.

Q> Do you make all these scary things yourselves?

A> Except for the jack-o-lanterns, 95% of what you see at Shriek Manor is constructed or modified by us. Only 5% is in any sort of original “purchased” state.

Q> When did you first get started?

A> Our first haunting was in 1999 and we’ve been happily doing it ever since.

Q> Where do you get your cobwebs from?

A> We make them ourselves out of white nylon panty hose. Just buy some off of E-Bay, scrape and poke with a pair of scissors, stretch and viola!

Q> We’ve seen a dog barking in the window with a strobe light. Is it part of your display?

A> No, that’s just Maddie our Wire Fox Terrier. She barks when the doorbell rings (which as you can imagine, happens quite a bit on Halloween night.)

Q> How do you make your tombstones?

A> Our technique continues to change, but essentially we use Fomular (“pink”) foam, saws, a dremel cutting tool, wood burning tools, scalpels.
